Whooper Swan   Cygnus cygnus

Fairly common passage migrant and winter visitor

 

Seen all months, but mainly October and November when birds are returning on passage. Birds have occasionally been recorded wintering. Three juveniles wintered 1998 into 1999, and 7 birds were present on the 3rd January, 2004.

 

The largest recorded numbers were 40 on the 1st November, 1999, which increased to 50, by the 5th. More usually, numbers are in single figures in March and April, and fluctuate between 5 and 20 in the autumn.
