Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula

Scarce breeding resident, fairly common passage migrant and winter visitor to Shetland.

Irregular spring and autumn visitor to Foula in small numbers. Especially on Mill Loch.

First recorded in 1892 when a small flock were seen but no other information is given.

Records for spring are extremely scarce. Numbers in the autumn usually peak in single figures. Unfortunately, lack of observers prevents a winter count.
