Reed Bunting   Emberiza schoeniclus

Fairly common passage migrant, and formerly a scarce breeding bird on Shetland. Poorly documented for Foula.

 

The first recorded bird was on the very early autumn date of 21st – 23rd August, 1963 (Jackson, 1966).

 

The bird is an annual visitor in the spring and autumn. Maximum spring counts include 4 on 7th May, 2003 and 7th May, 2004. In autumn the maximum counts include 15 on 23rd September, 2000.

 

The earliest record was a single male on the 13th March, 2004. The latest was seen on the 9th November, 2002.
