Redstart Phonenicurus phoenicurus

Fairly common passage migrant

Has been recorded from April – June and September – October. The earliest spring bird was seen on the 30^th April, 2003. The latest returning bird was observed on the 31^st October, 1997.

Daily counts are usually in the single figures, and the majority of these birds are seen in September. The following large fall of this species have occurred:

• A remarkable 80 were seen in early May, 1970 (Pennington et al., 2004).
• Another exceptional count of 70 birds was made on the 23^rd September, 2000. This number dwindled from 35, on the 24^th to 30 on the 25^th – 28^th and into single figures by the 5^th October.
