Redshank   Tringa totanus

Few documented records. Common breeding resident, passage migrant and winter visitor to Shetland.

There is little data available on breeding birds. A pair was noted to have displayed in 1976, but did not breed. Two or three pairs were present at occupied sites in 1996 (success unknown). It is probable that there are one or two pairs at least attempting to breed most years.

The peak counts are usually towards the end of July and August. Throughout the rest of the year, numbers do not normally exceed the early teens, and fall back to single figures from October onwards until the following spring.
