Red-backed Shrike   Lanius collurio

Fairly common passage migrant. Under-recorded on the island in the past, due to lack of observer coverage.

 

·         1966   5 individuals were recorded between 24th August and the 5th October (Furness, 1983).

·         1973   Singles present between 19th May and 10th June.

·         1992   One, Crooked Bum, and One, Punds, 5th September.

·         1993   Adult male, Blobbers Burn (HT 955 407) 27th September.

·         1994   22nd – 24th September.

·         1995   One, Bums, 10th – 13th September.

·         1996   One, 21st May, then different female birds 23rd – 24th with Two present on the 24th; different males present 22nd & 25th May. In autumn, One, from 17th – 18th August, then different birds 24th – 30th August, 25th – 30th & 26th August; One, Crooked Burn on one or two days between 27th September and 3rd October.

·         1997   1st returning bird for Shetland was a male on Foula on the 17th – 19th May; another male was present on the 18th and another on the 19th. The other records are as follows – One male, 23rd May; 3 males. 24th; One female, 25th – 27th; One male, 26th – 27th; another female on the 28th; One female, 4th – 8th June then different females on the 5th and 11th June. In autumn there was One on the 3rd- 5th September and another on the 9th September.

·         1998   One male on the 14th May and Two on the 15th; One, 7th June. In autumn, One, Crooked Burn, 21st – 24th September.

·         2000   One, 30th September; Two on the 2nd October; singles, on the 3rd and 5th – 6th October.

·         2003   Singles 18th – 21st May. There were also singles on the 12th – 14th, 23rd and 25th August and 1st – 4th, 8th, 10th, 12th and 17th September and 1st – 2nd October. There were two birds present on the 9th, 11th and 14th – 16th September.

·         2004   A total of 10+ birds for the year: a male on 9th May, 2 on the 28th May and then almost daily records of up to 4 during 1st – 13th June, involving at least 7 individuals. In the autumn, there was one on the 31st August which remained until the 6th September, and another on the 11th September.

·         2005   Male, 24th May, and another on 4th June.

·         2006   Male, 13th – 14th May. In September there were a 1st W present on 10th and 11th and another on 23rd.

·         2010   One, on the 14th September.

·         2011   Adult female, Ham on the 17th – 18th September.
