Oystercatcher   Haematopus ostralegus

Not well documented despite being a common breeding summer visitor and passage migrant to Shetland

The first record refers to 20 pairs recorded in the spring of 1963. In 1971, the next available record, 26 pairs were recorded.

Birds continue to breed in small numbers. Numbers peak on spring and autumn passage, when they have reached 100 (4th April, 1997) although the usual maxima does not exceed 30 birds.
