Passage migrant to Shetland.

 

Annual migrant to Foula. Mostly in late autumn although recorded in all months. Possibly bred in 1970.

 

First record was a party of 6 on the 16th July 1965. Since then, has been recorded annually in varying numbers. Has summered and breeding was suspected when 2 adults and 3 young were seen together on 24th August 1970.

 

In some years daily tallies can reach the hundreds. Peak numbers are as follows:

 

550 birds on 12th 0ctober, 1996

500 birds on 5th October, 1997

75 birds on 31st October, 2003

At least 500 birds on 28th - 31st October, 2004

100 on the 25th September, 2005
