Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus
Scarce passage migrant in small numbers: April to November, but most
August and September.
Before 1954 birds were reported as virtually annual (Pennington et al., 2004), although it would
be interesting to know the origins of these records, as observers were virtually
nil and certainly not annual at the time!
Since then there have been as many as 6 (23rd August, 1962) observed in a day. However,
the norm is one or two birds at a time usually in the autumn, although
occasionally in the spring. This has been the case most years since 1992 when
observers were present. In 2003 up to 10 or 11 were recorded throughout the
autumn, which is exceptional.
