Fieldfare   Turdus pilaris

Very common passage migrant; over-wintering in small numbers

Migrant birds recorded from March to May and August into November. Occasional birds seen outwith these months.

The earliest record of a spring migrant was on the 29th – 30th March, 2003. The earliest autumn bird was seen on the 10th – 11th August, 1996 and the latest on the 9th November at least.

Numbers are usually in the hundreds, although occasionally there can be a fall of birds which takes daily totals into the 1000s. In mid October, 1966, there was such a fall of 3000 birds (Pennington et al. 2004) and this remained the record until 2004, when on the 22nd October, at least 5000 birds were strewn across the island!
