Fairly common breeding summer visitor, passage migrant and rarer winter visitor to Foula

 

A regular breeding bird on Foula with between two and 30 pairs recorded in the past as holding territory.

 

During passage birds can usually be found feeding on the short turf on South Ness or at the North End. Numbers have reached 25 – on the 2nd October, 2000 – although the normal maxima falls within single figures.

 

A single winter bird was seen amongst 12 Purple Sandpipers at South Ness on the 1st January, 2004.
