Curlew   Numenius arquata

Common breeding resident or summer visitor and passage migrant and winter visitor to Shetland. Data limited for Foula.

 

There is little data available for breeding. The first documented breeding attempt was in 1976 (success unknown). The next documented record of breeding was in 1996, when 3 to 4 pairs were counted (success unknown).

 

There have been small parties of between 3 and 16 birds noted when observers have been present in spring and autumn from 1992 onwards.
