Corn Bunting   Emberiza calandra

Formerly a common breeding resident, but now a very rare vagrant.

From the mid to late 1800s Evans and Buckley report the Corn Bunting as being abundant on the island (Evans and Buckley, cited in Pennington et al., 2004). However, a visit to the island in 1948 found no birds present. Thereafter, only the following passage birds have been seen:

·         1954   One in May (Furness, 1983).

·         1967   Single bird recorded in May (Furness, 1983).

·         1968   Two birds seen in April (Furness, 1983).

·         1970   Singles on the 7th April and the 10th May.

·         1971   One, 27th May.

·         2004   One, South Ness, 9th May, was relocated the same day in Ham. The bird remained until the 20th May.
